Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 12

Today my sister was part of a violin recital. One of my friends is über good at violin; he's not protegy-good, but really damn gifted nonetheless. During the drive back, my sister asked aloud, "Why can't I be as good as him?"

My dad responded by saying, "Well, if you work hard you'll get there someday." I get the same response when I ask the question about tennis. There's the rub, and here's the question.

Am I the only person who gets pissed by what complete bullshit that statement is? I understand the advice-giver is trying to make me feel better, but it's clear that the other person is far more gifted than I. It would be far better if they were brutally honest. Any thoughts?

For your time, here's a Viper I saw recently. Dat roof fitment though.

Honestly though, if you poured yourself into your hobby, you could get that good. For most people that just means removing other things in your life so you have the time to become excellent at whatever hobby it is you are working at.

It may be an ugly answer, but your dad isn't wrong.

That being said, some people do seem to have a natural talent for things. Natural talent seems to help either jump-start the process or shorten the amount of time necessary to acquire skills.

Your dad is there to encourage you guys not break you down. Yes maybe a realistic answer very well may be "You'll never be as good as that person" but then what? Would even care of have any more interest after someone who has far more life experience than you tells you you're wasting your time?

For some people a demeaning statement like that can give them the drive they need to be better. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and was told he wasn't good enough then look how that turned out. But most times it will just make a person lose their drive and instead pour their effort into something else or nothing at all.

Just be happy that you have a dad that will encourage you rather than someone who just wants to break you down.

Good point... I've always tried to be a well-rounded person, so that's probably why I'm not the best at anything. More of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

Your Dad is right... You said yourself, he's not prodigy good. It then becomes a matter of priorities and determination. How bad does she want it? What is she willing to give up to be that good? Is she willing to give up 2 hours a day practicing? If she is, I would be willing to bet she could take his chair away from him. It's all about what you are willing to give up to get something else.

I'm the same way. I was close to being excellent in a few things as well (including tennis!), but always wanted to be good at everything instead of a master at one.

Oh certainly. In my experience though, if you have a little talent, but work very hard, you can surpass the ones with a lot of talent.

Your dad is, like others have said right in at least one sense. But if you go on a bit further and ask why someone practises more than someone else, you perhaps get a more meaningful answer.

I'd guess that your sister's friend simply enjoys playing the violin more, so prioritises practise differently: for him, maybe it's not a matter of working at it because he finds the practise fun. Or maybe he just has pushy parents who force him to work at it, I have no real idea.

I'm of the belief that anybody can do anything they want. It's all just a matter of how badly you want something.

In other words, how much are you willing to sacrifice to get something?

[I actually just wrote about this on an exam, so good timing!]
